'Mixing' music and house/electronic dance music (EDM) was a shock to the music industry. Without the improving technology, there wouldn't have been such a drastic change in the music landscape that people had always been use to. In the 2000s there was a switch from turntables and vinyl records to compact-disc players. "FinalScratch, unveiled that year and on the market in early 2002, made it possible to play digital files on a traditional turntable through the use of a specially encoded record. In addition, 2001 saw the debut of Ableton Live, a computer software program that enabled users to compose, cue, and blend digital tracks by way of a waveform display—thus eliminating the motor skills previously necessary to perform an effective DJ set" (Brittanica). Thus, the start of EDM music festivals that are becoming more and more popular every year.
In about 2007, Tiesto was attempting to create a new American mainstream of this type of music and performance. There was a decent amount of backlash; people did not understand what this new type of music was. Others were fascinated. He dabbled in 'experimental music' which is when an artist pushes boundaries of certain genres. Tiesto was essentially the beginning of electronic/dance music and made great efforts to popularize it. Without his music and publicity, the world of EDM wouldn't be the way it is today. The rave and club mainstream may not be that new anymore, but it sure isn't going anywhere any time soon.
