SMARTPHONES

What's a smartphone? A mobile phone that performs many of the functions of a computer, typically having a touchscreen interface, Internet access, and an operating system capable of running downloaded apps.

These little devices have surprisingly been around for about 26 years. IBM unveiled the first smartphone in 1992 and went on the market in 1994. About 50,000 'Simon Personal Communicator's' were sold in 6 months. It included features such as touchscreen, email, fax, notes and calendar, and apps. Despite the small monochrome LCD screen and one-hour battery life, this phone was advanced for it's time. Next on the market was the Blackberry 5810, which included music, a full keyboard, advanced security, and internet access. This was incredible.
Personally, when I hear smartphone, I think of the iPhone. Created by Steve Jobs in 2007, this was the most advanced smartphone to date. 1.4 million iPhones were sold the first year and 11.6 million were sold the following. The amount of gigabytes was impressive and the wide LCD screen was perfect for videoing. The battery life also made IBM look like garbage. What also really stood out with the iPhone was also the apps you could download to your smartphone.

This may or may not take you by surprise, but by 2015 about 84% of Americans claimed they could not go a day without their phone.

Obviously, the iPhones and smartphones are improving constantly. There is increasing memory, power, ability to use multiple applications at once, HD cameras, voice command, gaming, and video or music streaming. These little devices are taking over, if you really think about it. Is that a good or a bad thing? That's a matter of opinion.
I'm sure the future holds some great things when it comes to those smartphones we use daily.
